Rachel Dorsey
Painting + Drawing
Abstract
The specific body of work shown here depicts value-neutral care routines connected to lessons from chronic illness: care for the body (skincare, massage) and care for each other (gathering, community, touch).

More broadly, my current work looks at chronic illness, showing the daily gamut of rest, (inter-)dependence, melodrama, varied physical sensations, vulnerabilities, and connections formed alongside my experience of autoimmunity. Through material exploration with bedsheets, table linens, furniture, rounded substrates, and cotton gauze, I consider the painting as an object with intimate knowledge of human bodies. Large drawings, floppy fabric books, delicate trace monotypes, and flirtations with sculpture depict layered expressions of tenderness: sore, flimsy, and touching.
